ECO
ECO is a project conceived over the course of 12 weeks in a branding design class. The objective of the project was to conceptualize a company which specializes in eco-conscious product design. After creating a name, logo, and product, the end goal was to design a brand guide for the company and its product.
In an effort to combine my fundamental mediums - design and sound - the product I created is SFAR, an experimental sound object made primarily from natural clay. Being that the music industry largely contributes to the Earth’s 62 million tons of e-waste produced per year, the sound object is built to be repurposed as a design object, or smashed back into the earth from which it came. Inspired by volcanic bubbles, which dance underground and pop on the surface of mud pots, I wanted the shape of the instrument to be round and organic - unlike much of the electronic music instruments currently available in the market.
Guided by the direct and uncomplicated nature of Scandinavian and Japanese design, I sought to make the branding concise, clean, and slightly industrial. Mirroring the shape of SFAR, the logo came to be. The typography is simple and sans-serif, with a roundness that softens any edge in the brand. To tie these concepts together, I printed the guide on recycled eggshell paper, and bound the twenty pages together with four screws and rounded caps.
